Biographical Information[edit]

Miguel Bernard reached AAA briefly as a player then became a manager. He is the brother of Oscar Bernard.

Miguel began his career with the 1998 DSL Braves, hitting .227. He improved to .255 with the same club in '99. Coming to the USA, he batted .241/.302/.299 for the 2000 GCL Braves. He had 10 errors, leading Gulf Coast League backstops.

In 2001, Bernard was with the Danville Braves (.242/.297/.344) and Macon Braves (.189/.233/.252). He had 18 passed balls overall. For the 2002 Macon Braves, Miguel's batting line read .214/.258/.308. Backing up Brayan Pena, he threw out 36% of opposing base-stealers. Bernard gunned down an amazing 19 of 36 attempted base thieves in 2003, when he batted .308/.361/.421 in 35 games as Brian McCann's backup for the Rome Braves and was 0 for 1 for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.

Bernard played in 2004 for the Rome (.277/.326/.471 in 75 G) and Myrtle Beach clubs (.197/.288/.282 in 24 G), playing a career-high 99 games. In '05, he ended his playing career by bouncing between four Atlanta affiliates - the GCL Braves (.321/.375/.464 in 10 G), Myrtle Beach (.323/.362/.662 in 18 G), the Mississippi Braves (.237/.284/.289 in 20 G) and the Richmond Braves (1 for 7, 2b in his two games at AAA).

After his playing career ended, Bernard worked as a scout, coach, and manager in the Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals organizations. He may have managed the DSL Blue Jays 1 in 2009 but this could not be verified. In 2010 he worked as an international scout in the Dominican Republic in addition to managing. His managing role in 2012 is possible, but not certain, as Cesar Martin is also given in sources as a manager.

Bernard joined the Royals player development system in 2013 and coached the DSL Royals in 2013-2014. In 2015 some sources list him as the manager of the DSL Royals, but the original announcement of coaching staffs on January 9, 2015 listed him as a coach and Jose Gualdron as the manager. A best guess is that he managed the club that year. In 2019 Bernard served as a catching coach, probably for both of the Royals teams in the Dominican Summer League. In 2020 he was scheduled to work stateside for the first time as manager of the AZL Royals before COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the minor league season. Bernard was the catching coach for the DSL Royals Blue in 2021. He was the assistant hitting coach of the ACL Royals in 2022 and bench coach of the same team in 2023.

In addition, Bernard worked two seasons in the Dominican League with the Toros del Este, first as a coach for the 2013/2014 team and then as the third base base coach for the 2020/2021 team. Bernard switched to the rival Estrellas Orientales in 2021/2022. He was the first base coach for his first two seasons and will be the third base coach during the 2023/2024 season.
