Biographical Information

Frederick "Newt" Hunter played one season with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1911, getting into 65 games at age 31. He was a long-time minor leaguer, playing at least during 1903-1918 along with some appearances as a player-manager in 1924. He managed in the minors for five seasons

Newt is listed as the regular first baseman with the Pirates, appearing in 61 games at first while Bill McKechnie was in 58 and Honus Wagner in 28. Newt was six years younger than Honus and seven years older than Bill. While Newt's batting average was a bit below the team average, his OBP and SLG were a bit above. Newt's fielding percentage and range at first base beat out both other players. In 1912, 25-year-old Dots Miller got the job.

After his playing career ended, Hunter was a Philadelphia Phillies coach from 1928 to 1930 and in 1933. He scouted for the Boston Red Sox from 1934 to 1949 and the Phillies from 1950 to 1953.
