- 1889 - Baltimore drops out of the American Association and joins the Atlantic Association.
- 1926 - Bill Carrigan, popular Boston Red Sox manager who won pennants in 1915 and 1916, is drafted out of retirement to resurrect the cellar-dwellers.
- 1931 - George Gibson comes out of retirement to manage Pittsburgh. Ten years earlier he had led the Pirates to three first-division finishes. His three-year stint at the helm will make him the last Canadian manager of the 20th century.
- 1932 - The Chicago Cubs get Babe Herman from the Cincinnati Reds for Rollie Hemsley and three others.
- 1948 - Player-manager Lou Boudreau is selected the AL MVP. Boudreau had almost been traded to the Browns earlier in the year, but protests by fans kept Lou in Cleveland. After the World Series win, owner Bill Veeck commented, "Sometimes the best trades are the ones you never make."
- 1950 - Makoto Kozuru and Kaoru Betto are named the first MVPs in the Central League and Pacific League respectively.
- 1952 - On a local TV program, Brooklyn Dodger Jackie Robinson charges that the New York Yankees management is racist for its failure to bring up a black player. George Weiss of the Yanks denies the allegations, but the Yankees' first African-American player, Elston Howard, will not make his debut until 1955.
- 1953:
- The player reps reject Commissioner Ford Frick's plan for a conference on their pension after he bars their attorney's presence.
- The Cubs sell C Carl Sawatski to the White Sox.
- 1958 - Italian baseball commissioner Prince Borghese visits the United States to seek aid in organizing Italian teams.
- 1959:
- The Orioles trade P Billy Loes and Billy O'Dell to the Giants for P Gordon Jones, OF Jackie Brandt, and C Roger McCardell. O'Dell will win 56 games for the Giants.
- The Cards send popular SS Don Blasingame to the Giants for infielder Daryl Spencer and Leon Wagner.
- 1961:
- Cubs outfielder Billy Williams (.278, 25, 86) is selected as the National League Rookie of the Year. Braves catcher Joe Torre and Cubs southpaw Jack Curtis also receive consideration for the honor.
- The White Sox trade pitchers Don Larsen and Billy Pierce to the Giants for pitchers Eddie Fisher, Dom Zanni, Verle Tiefenthaler and first baseman Bob Farley.
- 1965 - The Red Sox trade shortstop Eddie Bressoud to the Mets for outfielder Joe Christopher.
- 1967:
- The Cubs give up on pitcher Ray Culp and ship him to the Red Sox for minor leaguer Rudy Schlesinger and cash. A steal for the Sox, Culp will develop a palmball and win 64 games for them over the next four seasons.
- The Yankees purchase Gene Michael from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 1970:
- The Cubs trade 48-year-old veteran knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm to the Braves for minor league first baseman Hal Breeden.
- The White Sox trade OF Ken Berry to the Angels for OF Jay Johnstone in a six-player deal. The White Sox also make a rare trade with the Cubs when they send OF Jose Ortiz and infielder Ossie Blanco to the North side for pitchers Pat Jacquez and Dave Lemonds.
- 1971 - The Twins trade SS Leo Cardenas to the Angels for P Dave LaRoche.
- 1972 - Twelve transactions, involving 36 players, take place. Among those sent to new clubs are OF Larry Hisle (to the Twins), 2B Dave Johnson (Braves), OF Del Unser (Phils), Oscar Gamble (Indians), Cesar Tovar (Phils) and OF Hal McRae and P Wayne Simpson (Royals).
- 1981 - Yankees P Dave Righetti (8-4, 2.06 in 1981) wins the American League Rookie of the Year Award.
- 1988 - The Royals sign veteran catcher Bob Boone, who hit a career-high .295 last season.
- 1992 - The Reds sign free agent P John Smiley to a four-year contract.
- 1994 - The Brewers trade P Doug Henry to the Mets in exchange for Javier Gonzalez and infielder Fernando Vina. Vina will play 140 games at 2B and hit .283 while Henry will be 2-8 with the Mets.
- 1995 - The Dodgers sign free agent SS Greg Gagne.
- 1998 - The Diamondbacks sign free agent P Randy Johnson to a four-year contract.
- 1999:
- Members of the Major League Umpires Association vote 57-35 to form a new union, with one vote voided because the umpire signed his ballot. The National Labor Relations Board will certify the election results in seven days, if there are no objections. However, Jerry Crawford, the president of the old union, says objections are likely to be filed.
- Pete Rose launches a new web site, allowing fans to add their names to a petition to vote for his reinstatement. He was banned from the game for gambling in August 1989.
- Braves minor leaguer Roger Blanco is killed by robbers in Catia La Mar, Venezuela. Blanco, 30, was traded to the Braves in 1996 for Mark Whiten.
- 2000:
- The Yankees sign Orioles free agent P Mike Mussina to a six-year contract worth $88.5 million. Mussina says a deciding factor was a call from Joe Torre.
- Ichiro Suzuki inks a three-year, $14 million deal with the Seattle Mariners; he will be named MVP next year, his first in the US.
- 2001:
- Arizona P Curt Schilling wins the 2001 Hutch Award, given each year by Seattle's Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to a player who displays "honor, courage & dedication to baseball while overcoming adversity in their personal or professional lives."
- The major leagues' plan to contract by two teams next season is put in jeopardy by Minnesota courts. The state's Supreme Court refuses to grant the request for a speedy review of the appeal of the injunction which forces the Twins to play in 2002, and the appellate court sets the hearing for December 27th, a date many believe is too late to make the elimination of two teams a reality.
- Unsure of their future, the Montreal Expos sign a one-year lease to play their home games of the 2002 season at Olympic Stadium. Due to the threat of being eliminated because of the proposed contraction of major league teams, the agreement gives the Expos the right to cancel the contract unilaterally.
- 2010:
- The Rockies sign a seven-year, $134 million contract extension with SS Troy Tulowitzki that will keep him in Colorado until 2020. In other shortstop news, the Giants ink veteran Miguel Tejada to a one-year deal for $6.5 million.
- The Dodgers trade IF Ryan Theriot to St. Louis for P Blake Hawksworth, while St. Louis signs P Brian Tallet from Toronto.
- The Rangers sign side-arming Japanese reliever Yoshinori Tateyama as they are toying with the idea of moving young bullpen standouts Neftali Feliz and Alexi Ogando to the starting rotation. The 35-year-old Tateyama is a 11-year veteran of Nippon Pro Baseball, all with the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters.
- 2011:
- Yomiuri Giants starter Hirokazu Sawamura, with a 2.03 ERA in 2011, is the runaway winner of the 2011 Central League Rookie of the Year Award. He is the fourth straight Yomiuri winner, following Tetsuya Yamaguchi, Tetsuya Matsumoto and Hisayoshi Chono. Seibu Lions closer Kazuhisa Makita takes home the 2011 Pacific League Rookie of the Year Award, while long-hyped Yuki Saito gets just 3 of 214 votes and places fourth.
- The Angels acquire C Chris Iannetta from the Rockies for P Tyler Chatwood. The Rockies then sign Ramon Hernandez to be their new catcher.
- The Cubs sign free agent OF David DeJesus to a two-year contract.
- 2012:
- Atlanta trades P Tommy Hanson to the Angels for P Jordan Walden.
- The Mets sign 3B David Wright to an eight-year extension for $138 million, the largest contract in team history.
- 2013 - Reports indicate that the Twins have signed their second free agent starting pitcher in less than a week, coming to an agreement with Phil Hughes on a three-year contract worth $24 million. Hughes will still need to be pass a physical exam before the deal becomes official.
- 2016 - Major League Baseball owners and the Players' Association agree on a new five-year Collective Bargaining Agreement. Highlights of the deal include: a raise in the threshold for luxury tax payments to $195 million in 2017, gradually rising to reach $210 million in 2021; the All-Star Game will no longer determine home field advantage for the World Series; and teams will no longer forfeit a first-round pick in the amateur draft if they sign a premium free agent. There is no agreement on instituting an international draft; instead, teams will have an annual $6 million bonus pool limit for international signings. The deal ensures that labor peace in MLB will have exceeded a quarter of a century by the time the agreement expires.
- 2018 - The Indians trade All-Star C Yan Gomes to the Nationals in return for three prospects headed by P Jefry Rodriguez. In another deal, the Mariners send RP Alex Colome to the White Sox for C Omar Narvaez.
- 2020:
- The 2020 KBO awards are announced. Mel Rojas Jr. is named KBO MVP, the first winner born in Latin America, after finishing .005 shy of a Triple Crown. Hyeong-jun So (13-6) is named KBO Rookie of the Year.
- The 2020 Bundesliga-1 MVP awards are announced. The Buchbinder Legionäre's Matt Vance is named southern MVP ten years after he had won that award previously; he won the batting title and led the league in total bases. In the north, Wilson Lee of the Bonn Capitals also becomes a two-time winner, having also won in 2015; the former two-way threat did not pitch this year but led the loop in homers, hits, total bases and RBI.
- 2021 - With the self-imposed deadline of 11:59 pm on December 1st for completing negotiations of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement looming, teams are doubling down on signing free agents before a possible freeze, continuing a frenzy begun three days ago. The latest beneficiary of a huge contract is IF Javier Baez, who reportedly signs with the Tigers for six years and $150 million, already the sixth deal over $100 million this off-season. On the trade front, the Rays send IF Joey Wendle to the Marlins in return for OF prospect Kameron Misner, thus avoiding having to give him a big raise through salary arbitration.
- 2022 - Li Lin of the Lamigo Monkeys wins the CPBL MVP for 2022 after winning the third Triple Crown in league history. He also led in runs, hits, total bases, slugging and OPS while making the top five in steals and OBP. The Rookie of the Year goes to reliever Kuan-Wei Chen of the Wei Chuan Dragons.
