Biographical Information[edit]
Pedro Astacio was nicknamed "La Mula" (The Mule). He took the ball on Opening Day for the Colorado Rockies in 2000, allowing just 2 runs on 6 hits in 7 1/3 innings at Turner Field, a 2-0 loser to the Atlanta Braves. His 749 strikeouts with the Rockies from 1997-2001 were the franchise best until Ubaldo Jimenez passed him in 2011.
Astacio was pitching coach of the DSL Rockies 1 in 2019 and DSL Colorado in 2022-2023.
Pedro's cousin, Hector Astacio, pitched in the minor league chain of the Los Angeles Angels in 2001-2004 and was featured in Matt McCarthy's 2009 memoir Odd Man Out: A Year on the Mound With a Minor League Misfit.
