Biographical Information[edit]
Pete Hughes has been a college coach.
Hughes was the third baseman and quarterback for Davidson College from 1986-1990, teaming with Robert Eenhoorn on the infield.
He was an assistant coach in football and baseball at Hamilton College in 1990-1991, then held the same roles with Northeastern University from 1991-1996.
In 1997-1998, Pete was head coach of Trinity University; he set a school record with 33 wins in 1998 and was 53-20 for a team that had averaged 11 wins over its prior 17 seasons. He then became head coach at Boston College, going 250-181-2 in eight years after the team with 13 wins per year over its prior 35 years. He was named Big East Conference Coach of the Year in 2002. In 2005, he guided Boston College to a team-record 37 wins. Among those he helped develop were first-round pick Chris Lambert.
During 2006, Hughes became head coach of Virginia Tech, replacing the legendary Chuck Hartman. In 2014 he moved to the University of Oklahoma, replacing Sunny Golloway. He was 128-107-1 before stepping down after the 2017 season. Hughes spent 2018 as a volunteer assistant coach at University of Georgia then was hired as head coach of Kansas State University for 2019.
Hughes' son Thomas played at Oklahoma and Kansas State, then became an assistant coach at Morehead State University in 2020. Thomas became an assistant under Pete at KSU in 2023.
