Biographical Information

Pitcher Randall Delgado reached the majors with the Atlanta Braves in 2011.

Delgado was signed by the Braves and scout Luis Ortiz at age 16. He was 1-2 with a 2.00 ERA for the 2007 DSL Braves, striking out 50 and allowing 34 hits and 12 walks in 45 innings. In 2008, he went 3-8 with a 3.13 ERA for the Danville Braves but struck out 81 in 69 innings. He led the Appalachian League in losses but was second to Daniel Osterbrock in strikeouts. He was named to Panama's preliminary roster for the 2009 World Baseball Classic but did not make the final cut. He spent that summer with the Rome Braves and put up an unimpressive record (5-10, 4.35) but again had good strikeout totals (141 K in 124 IP). Delgado split 2010 between the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (4-7, 2.76, 120 K in 117 1/3 IP, .210 opponent average) and Mississippi Braves (3-5, 4.74, 42 K in 43 2/3 IP, .222 opponent average). He led Atlanta farmhands in strikeouts. Baseball America ranked him as the #6 prospect in the Carolina League, behind teammate Julio Teheran, Eric Hosmer, John Lamb, Wil Myers and Devin Mesoraco.

Opening 2011 back with Mississippi, Randall was doing okay (4-4, 3.54) after 13 games, when he got called up to the big leagues for a spot start with Tommy Hanson injured. The right-hander did not fare well in his MLB debut, giving up seven hits, four runs (three earned) and two walks in four innings while striking out two. After a two-run homer by Josh Hamilton and a single by Adrian Beltre to open the 5th, he was yanked in favor of Cristhian Martinez. He took the loss to Colby Lewis and the Texas Rangers. He made 7 starts for the Braves in all that year, going 1-1 but with a solid 2.83 ERA. In 2012, he made 17 starts in 18 appearances for Atlanta, with a record of 4-9, 4.37. He had some difficulty with his control,, as he walked 42 batters in 92 2/3 innings, or 4.1 batters per 9 innings.

On January 24, 2013, Delgado was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks along with IF/OF Martin Prado, P Zeke Spruill and IFs Nick Ahmed and Brandon Drury in return for OF Justin Upton and 3B Chris Johnson.
