Biographical Information

Roberto Cabal was an outfielder-pitcher in Mexico.

Mexican League statistics are unavailable prior to 1937 (as of 2020). In 1937, he hit .302/~.330/.542 with 5 triples and 31 RBI in 24 games for the champion Agrario de México team. He led the Liga in RBI, one ahead of Eduardo Fuentes, and was two triples behind leader Alfonso Nieto. He had a 2.84 ERA in his lone mound outing of the year. In '38, he batted .316/~.380/.515 for the same club, while posting a 4-0, 4.24 record. He was with the Mexican national team for the 1938 Central American and Caribbean Games, a team that used several other LMB stars. Cuba protested as it was officially an amateur-only contest, but Mexico's team played (unlike 1935, when a similar contingent was sent home).

Cabal moved to the Indios de Anáhuac for 1939 and fell to .238/~.295/.295 but had a strong year on the mound at 8-5, 2.62. He tied for 9th in the league in wins and was in the top 10 in ERA. In 1940, he was with the Dorados de Chihuahua, batting only .200/.231/.320 while going 0-2 with a 12.91 ERA. He moved to the Azules de Veracruz in 1941 and won the title with illustrious teammates like Josh Gibson, Willie Wells and Ray Dandridge. He did his share with a 9-1, 4.09 record for a 117 ERA+. His batting stats are in dispute as the The Mexican League: Comprehensive Player Statistics lists him at .239/.324/.327 and Rafael Caballero at .270/.393/.419 and Seamheads.com reverses the two's lines. He would have been 7th in ERA had he qualified, right behind Hall-of-Famer Martin Dihigo.

The veteran faded to 5-7, 5.28 in '42 and hit .241/.322/.375, taking back the right field job. In 1943, he hit .233/~.352/.272 and struggled at 0-9, 6.62. He was 6 for 28 with 4 walks and a double in 1944 and went 0-2 with a 9.09 ERA to end his career. He died just four years later.

In known seasons, he had hit .251/~.327/.367 in 369 games per The Mexican League: Comprehensive Player Statistics and had gone 26-26, 4.84 in 109 games.
