Biographical Information

Shortstop Ronny Mauricio was signed by the New York Mets as an international amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic on July 2, 2017. He was highhly sought after and the Mets gave him a signing bonus of $2.1 million. He began his professional career the following season when he split his time between the GCL Mets and the Kingsport Mets of the Appalachian League, finishing at .273/.304/.410 in 57 games. That year, he began his career with a 20-game hitting streak, drawing immediate notice. In 2019, he spent a full season with the Columbia Fireflies of the South Atlantic League, batting .268/.307/.357 in 116 games. He was named a mid-season All-Star in the Sally League and a Mets organizational All-Star, the first of three straight seasons he would win such a distinction.

However, he had to wait a full year for his next action, as the minor league were shut down by the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020. In 2021, he was mostly with the Brooklyn Cyclones of the High-A East but also played 8 games in AA with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies as one of the youngest players at the level at age 20. In 108 games between the two stops, he batted .248/.296/.449, with his power emerging as he began to fill out his large 6'3" frame. He hit 15 doubles and 20 homers, after a previous high of just 4 homers; he also drove in 64 runs. He was named the top prospect in the High-A east and a league All-Star. In 2022, he played a full season at Binghamton in the Eastern League and batted .259/.296/.472 in 123 games, with 26 doubles and 26 homers, and 89 RBIs.

He first played in the Dominican League with the Tigres del Licey in 2020-21 and became a regular for the team in 2021-22. In 2022-23, he helped lead the team to a record-breaking 23rd league title by batting .287 with 5 homers and 31 RBIs in 46 games; he also scored the winning run of the championship series against the Estrellas Orientales in the 10th inning of Game 5 on January 18th. He followed that up by hitting .292 in 116 games for the Syracuse Mets of the AAA International League in 2023, with 30 doubles, 23 homers, 76 runs and 71 RBIs. He was called up to the big league club on September 1st and in his debut went 2 for 3 as the starting second baseman against the Seattle Mariners. One of the hits was a double that was crushed at 117.3 mph - the hardest-hit ball by any Mets player in two years, and the hardest first hit by any player since the introduction of Statcast in 2015! He hit .248 in 26 games for the Mets with 2 homers and 9 RBIs, while playing mainly second base and third base.

The Mets had big hopes for Ronny heading into 2024, but these were dashed when he suffered a torn right ACL in a Dominican League game in December, playing for Licey. The injury was likely to cost him most, if not all of the season.
