Biographical Information

Sal Urso was drafted out of high school by the Seattle Mariners in the 36th round of the 1990 Amateur Draft. In his ten minor league seasons, he posted a 28-26 record and 3.48 ERA.

Urso had thrown a 5-hit, 9-strikeout complete game win in the Gold Medal game of the 1989 World Junior Championship to beat Cuba.

In 1996, he was very close to making the opening day roster of the Seattle Mariners; he very much impressed manager Lou Piniella and the M's skipper talked the front office into putting the former replacement player on the major league roster. However, some established players went to the brass themselves and talked them out of putting Urso on the roster. He never played in the Major Leagues.

in 1998, he set the Eastern League single season record for games pitched, appearing in 69 contests. That season, he went 8-6 with no saves and a 4.10 ERA for the Trenton Thunder.

Brother of former Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim farmhand and current University of Tampa head coach Joe Urso.
