Biographical Information[edit]
Sam Covington played three seasons in the majors, mostly as a first baseman. In 40 games split between the St. Louis Browns and Boston Braves, he hit .178. He was one of the few major leaguers who played prior to and after the existence of the Federal League, but did not play in the bigs during the existence of the loop. His brother, Tex, was 7 years older, but since Sam broke into the majors at 18, he came up only one year after Tex's second year. Sam also played at least 14 seasons in the minors. He played for Tyler in 1912 and was still playing in the minors as late as 1927. The heart of his minor league career was spent with Indianapolis (1918-1922).
Both Sam and Tex were born in Henryville, TN and both died in Denison, TX. Sam outlived his brother by some 31 years. They are the only two major leaguers (through 2019) who were born in Henryville and died in Denison.
