Biographical Information[edit]

Sergio Perez has pitched as high as AAA.

Perez was 11-2 for the University of Tampa in 2006. He helped the school win the 2006 Division II College World Series and was named an All-American for NCAA Division II. The Houston Astros took him in the second round of the 2006 amateur draft, the 68th overall pick and right behind Trevor Cahill. The scout was Jon Bunnell. Perez signed for a $550,000 bonus.

Perez had a fine start to his pro career; with the 2006 Lexington Legends, he was 3-0 with a 2.20 ERA, 9 hits allowed and 21 whiffs in 16 1/3 IP. In 2007, he had a 7-10, 4.00 record for the Salem Avalanche. He tied Dustin Evans and Clint Everts for 6th in the Carolina League in losses and tied for 8th in starts (25). In '08, the Tampa native went 2-3 with a 2.30 ERA in limited action for the Corpus Christi Hooks.

Back with Corpus Christi in 2009, the 24-year-old was 11-11 with a 4.68 ERA. He was second in the Houston chain in wins, behind Polin Trinidad, and tied for third in losses. In the Texas League, he ranked among the leaders in wins (tied for third with Graham Godfrey, Lance Lynn and Omar Poveda), losses (tied for second), starts (27, tied for third), innings pitched (142 1/3, 6th between Brandon Dickson and Ernesto Frieri), hits allowed (167, 3rd), runs allowed (88, 3rd), earned runs allowed (74, tied for 6th) and walks (60, 6th).

Sergio split 2010 between Corpus Christi (2-3, 3.09) and the Round Rock Express (3-4, 5.40). In winter ball, he allowed one run in 1 1/3 IP for the Navegantes del Magallanes. In 2011, he was 5-9 with a 4.25 ERA for the Oklahoma City RedHawks. He tied for 8th in the 2011 PCL with 10 hit batsmen and tied Chris Seddon and Billy Buckner for 5th with 12 wild pitches. His second winter in Venezuela was far better, as he was 3-1 with a 2.47 ERA for the Tigres de Aragua. He was 5th in the Venezuelan League in ERA (between Andrew Baldwin and Renyel Pinto), 4th in hits allowed (65), 3rd in walks (30, trailing Scot Drucker and Pinto) and tied for 4th with 50 strikeouts (even with Eric Junge).

With the 2012 Oklahoma City club, Perez was 4-2 with a 4.54 ERA, now being used in a relief role. He had another strong winter in Venezuela, this time with Magallanes (9-4, 3.50). He was 6th in ERA, first in wins (two ahead of runner-up Dwayne Pollok) second in innings pitched (72, right behind Pollok) and second with 59 strikeouts (27 behind Alex Torres). In the 2013 Caribbean Series, he lost game one to the Leones del Escogido and got a no-decision in the rematch with Escogido, which his bullpen blew. He had a 4.50 ERA for the Series. He then joined the Spanish national team for the 2013 World Baseball Classic. He started against Puerto Rico but struggled, allowing three runs while facing all nine batters in the starting lineup. He allowed a single to Ángel Pagán, a sacrifice to Irving Falú, plunked Alex Ríos and gave up a double to Carlos Beltrán. Yadier Molina hit into an error by Jesus Merchan, then Mike Aviles's sacrifice fly made it 2-0. He walked both Pedro Valdés and Carlos Rivera to force in a third run before fanning Andy González. In the second, he walked Pagán, hit Ríos and walked Beltrán but escaped giving up any runs. After allowing a single to Valdés to open the third, he was relieved by Richard Salazar, who shut down Puerto Rico. He tied Yu-Ching Lin, Ryan Searle, Thyago Vieira and Jose Veras for the tournament lead in hit batsmen.

The Oakland A's signed him for 2013 and he pitched briefly for the Midland Rockhounds (1 R in 1/3 IP) and Stockton Ports (0-1, 12 R in 8 IP) before being let go. He next signed with the Pericos de Puebla, going 2-4 with a 5.80 ERA. In the winter of 2013-2014, he was 2-5 with a 4.06 ERA for the Navegantes del Magallanes, fanning 48 in 44 1/3 IP. he allowed 13 earned runs in 16 2/3 postseason innings, going 0-1. He tied Ramon Ramirez for third in the Venezuelan League in losses int he regular season and was third in Ks, behind Roy Merritt and Victor Garate. He was briefly in spring training with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2014. He was 1-1 with a save and a 2.37 ERA for the Long Island Ducks that summer. With the Águilas del Zulia in 2014-2015, he was 2-3 with a 5.19 ERA. He split the summer between the Ducks (11 R in 11 2/3 IP) and the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (0-1, 2.19 in 14 G).

In 2015-2016, he was with his 4th Venezuelan Winter League team. He had a 2-4, 2.54 record for the Bravos de Margarita, placing among the LVBP leaders in ERA (6th), tying for 6th in strikeouts (43) and tied for 7th in losses. He was 0-1 in the postseason, giving up 18 runs (all earned) in ten innings. In the 2016 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, he pitched the most innings on the Spanish staff (4 1/3, 2 1/3 ahead of Rogelio Armenteros and Jose Cruz). He started the opener against Colombia and allowed four hits, three walks and three runs (two earned) in 4 1/3 IP, striking out two; Richard Castillo took over in the 5th and Perez was handed the defeat.
