Biographical Information[edit]

Shih-Kai Chang was a pitcher and infielder for the Brother Elephants for 7 years. He is the uncle of Cheng-Hsun Hsieh.

Chang played for Taiwan in the 1995 World Junior Championship, in which they won a Silver Medal. He was 0-1 despite a 0.00 ERA, tying Canadian Aaron Myette and South Korean Byung-hyun Kim (both future big leaguers) for the lead in ERA. He beat out Joe Horgan, Chris Reitsma, Matt White, Gil Meche and Jonder Martínez among others. Chang did not make the tourney All-Star team. He represented his homeland again in the 1997 Asian Championship (getting a Bronze). In the 1998 Baseball World Cup, he went 0-1 with a 3.72 ERA, walking 6 in 9 2/3 IP.

Chang began his CPBL career with the Elephants in 1999. He went 3-5 with a 2.38 ERA and was named Pitcher of the Month for August. Had he qualified, he would have finished third in the league in ERA behind import pitchers Carlos Mirabal and Don Lemon. In 2000, the lefty fell to 3-6, 5.26; he led the league with 18 wild pitches and had the worst ERA and WHIP (1.70) of any qualifier. He was also selected into the 2000 CPBL All-Star Game, and he pitched 2 shutout innings to get the win.

Chang rebounded to 10-5, 2.99 in the 2001 CPBL. He was 7th in ERA (between Chien-San Kao and Domingo Guzman), tied for 6th in wins and second in wild pitches (14). He was the youngest Elephants pitcher to that point to notch a double-digit win total. After that, he saw limited action due to injury, never again reaching 20 innings let alone his 153 2/3 IP of 2001. His stats were: 1-0, 3.09 in 2002; 0-1, 5.84 with a 2.22 WHIP in 2003; 6.92 ERA in 2004 and 0-3, 10.80 with a 1.94 WHIP in 2005. He was moved to the infield briefly that final year and went 0 for 1, never making much of the change.

Overall, Chang was 17-20 with a 4.00 ERA, struck out 247 and pitched 400 2/3 innings in 7 seasons in CPBL.
