We've done a good job this year of rotating the featured articles every couple months instead of 5-6 months as we were doing before. Today in Baseball

I tried to fill in the January 10 Today in Baseball slot but the entry won't show up on the Main Page. When you go to edit Main Page, it says it's looking for Template: Today in Baseball/January 9 and I filled that in too, but it still isn't showing up. Can someone help?

Weird. Now, it shows up without any edits to the Main Page or the Template, but the formatting is all wacky.

When a template on the main page is changed (such as the TDiH), the page cache must be purged.

Re: redirects, you are creating a lot of double redirects, because everything redirects to Year, team's name at the moment. So those will all be double redirects to Year, team's ful name now. --Jeff 13:12, 14 August 2007 (EDT)

I just fixed the 5 or 6 that had been created. If option 3 redirects to option 1 now, and option 1 is moved to option 2, then option 3 automatically becomes a double redirect to option 2. Ok, I see now. However, #2 is what the pages will be ultimately moved to. So, if I can say this understandably, #1 currently redirects to #3 for a few teams. If I redirect #3 to #2, then #1 is a double-redirect to #2. So, when it's done, I have to fix the double redirects of #1 to #2. However, for the majority of the teams which I have yet to move, i.e. #2 redirects to #1, I'll need to reverse that. Oh the hard work. Thanks for saying it in a way you can understand it Jeff. HEAD'S UP

Ok, I just thought that I'd make a comment so that I don't have to repeat myself to everyone:

I am an editor at Wikipedia named, well, Soxrock. I decided to chip in over here to help develop this place. However, I thought of taking elements of Wikipedia and incorporating it into the Bullpen. However, since some of the names don't work here (like Jack Clark (baseball)|Jack Clark) I've tried to remove all those kind of names as I find them. When I was busy with the World Series articles, I removed so many red links it's not even funny. I think that because of the links still found red and whatnot that I am somewhat unjustly criticized. It's not like I'm just giving a could shoulder to those red links. So when you find articles from Wikipedia and find a couple red links, I just happened to either miss them or they still linked somewhere else. I did not purposely ignore them. I have a feeling Sean's intent for the Bullpen was to have a biographical encyclopedia of major leaguers, but at this point the Bullpen is probably the best source on the web for minor league info, and one of the best (if not the best) for international competition, Negro League, Cuban, and Japanese baseball. --Jeff 12:25, 24 August 2007 (EDT)

I think japanbaseballdaily is probably the best Japanese source and Wikipedia might have more on Cuba and possibly on the Negro Leagues (of course, they've been around three times as long) but I think we're certainly up there in all those categories and after we've been around for five or ten years, I think this will be a very comprehensive site. New Category?

I relented Jeff. Everything is good. That note I wrote yesterday morning just ate at me all day, and, as I've read before (here) there was no way I would really leave the Bullpen.

Having said this, I'm not any happier at the transgressions of the other day, but I just couldn't leave. Besides, I had great work for the playoff pages lined up, and leaving now would've been bonehead. I'll be on a semi-break for an indefinite period (probably a few weeks) but I won't be inactive for weeks to come. I've unhidden my talk page and changed my userpage notice on the top. And, if you would please note, the part about the 1918 Red Sox, I was given permission by Mischa to do that stuff, just in case your wondering. Question about Removal

Templates

How do you create a template? I want to make templates for minor league stadiums by league (PCL Stadiums, IL Stadiums etc) I think that if more people see that we need pages for a good number of these stadiums they may get done more quickly and better. --Biggtone23 14:49, 25 October 2007 (EDT)

Pages looks off

Typo in the "Did you know" section

Hey there. I just came back to see how things were doing. I noticed there was a typo in the 'Did you know" section on the Main Page. It is the following hook: "...that Jiangang Lu was the first Chinese player to sign wit ha NPB team?" The bold characters is where you should see the problem. Can an administrator fix this please? New websites for European baseball

The IBAF along with the various international federations have created websites with stats, box scores, game updates, player interviews, all in English and the native language (German, French etc) for each country involved. Wikipedia licensing news

I don't know if you all know about this, but I'll post it just in case. Wikipedia recently had a vote among contributors over the possibility of going from the GFDL only to either CC-BY-SA only, both CC and GFDL or leaving things as they are now (GFDL). The results should be announced any day now.

I only post this here as an FYI. If they do go CC-BY-SA, it would affect our ability to copy text from their site and use it here, as the Bullpen is GFDL only. I see no point in changing our licensing here, but if Wikipedia changes, we should all be aware before posting both here and there. --Oaktree_b 21:22, 19 May 2009 (EDT)

Apparently Wikipedia has voted to go with the CC-by-sa and the GFDL starting June 15th. All contributions will be dual licensed, or CC only. They won't be able to import GFDL only text. From what I understand, when you post on Wikipedia, you will now (soon, after June 15th) dual license your contribution under the GFDL and the CC-by-sa. I don't think they'll be allowed to import from an only GFDL source like the bullpen, and I guess cross posting won't work either, and the text will be under both CC and GFDL, but the Bullpen is only GFDL. From the discussions on the Wikimedia website, they'll be fine to import from CC-only sources, but not from GFDL-only sources. I guess the Bullpen is the odd-man out here. It seems that most wikis are now going the CC route, as it makes it easier to share the data without having to print the GFDL license and include it with every copy you make. I guess you could cross post, putting the info here first, then changing it ever so slightly before going to wikipedia. I'm not a lawyer, so I don't really know how it would work. OK, directly from the wikimedia foundation, I found the following:

Are you basically replacing the GFDL on Wikipedia with CC-BY-SA? No, we proposed that all content currently available under GFDL will also be made available under the CC-BY-SA license, and that all future revisions must be dual licensed, with the exception of CC-BY-SA-only additions from external sources. What is dual-licensing? How are you going to administer it? It simply means that content will be available under both the GFDL and CC-BY-SA licenses simultaneously, unless some CC-BY-SA-only materials are imported and incorporated into that piece of content. In other words, reusers will be able to choose whether to reuse Wikipedia content under the GFDL license or the CC-BY-SA license (with a few exceptions). We have worked with Free Software Foundation and others to try to implement dual-licensing in a way that requires relatively little administrative overhead (or editor or user overhead). The outline of this arrangement were spelled out in e-mail by Richard Stallman, who was mindful of the need to make the problems of dual-licensing manageable: ALL contributors agree to the following: Wikipedia can release their newly written text under both GFDL and CC-BY-SA in parallel. However, if they imported any external material that's available under CC-BY-SA and not under GFDL, Wikipedia is bound by that. All old revisions are released under GFDL and CC-BY-SA. All new revisions are released with this license statement: This page is released under CC-BY-SA. Depending on its editing history, it MAY also be available under the GFDL; see [link] for how to determine that.

So we may still be able to import under the GFDL, unless the Wikipedia article has used some CC-by-sa only text. You'd have to look at the page history to determine it. Cross posting should be ok then, so long as we don't include any CC-by-sa only text in our post.

Stats for many, many leagues

Some dude is spamming their crappy baseball card website on a ton of pages. It might be useful if the checklists for each player was somewhat complete but it's not even close. Still having problems using the Flickr upload bot, where you can search for a name and it returns flickr images that match. It's been down for a while now. Add stat?

I am a sabermetrician. Is it okay if I add a few statistics I created?

It would be preferable if you would add only more generally accepted statistics to mainstream pages, but you can create articles about some of your own statistics and classify them under the "sabermetrics" category. Someone will come around and have a look at them and tell you if they're acceptable or not. Like wikipedia, we try to avoid articles about stuff someone and his buddies just made up. I can't edit the main page myself, but I noticed something that should probably be corrected. At the bottom of the main page, there is a notice that reads "The BR Bullpen is modeled on the Wikipedia: for more help use their help, view their Tutorial and Introduction". Sean Lahman sent this email to Philippe and myself last week:

I wanted to reach out to both of you because you're the two most active editors on the Bullpen site. I'm not sure whether you're aware, but there's recently been an agreement between Sean Forman and the folks at SABR to rebrand the site as the SABR/Baseball Reference Baseball Encyclopedia. I've been given the task of overseeing that project.

In the short term, that will simply mean changing the name on the front page and perhaps on some of the "About" pages.

While conceptually, this is a merger between the Bullpen site and the SABRpedia site, the plan is to leave the existing Bullpen site as-is and manually add content from the old SABRpedia site in selected subject areas. There's also the hope that over time, we can tap into some of the existing SABR content and make it available at the new merged site.

I'd like to get the re-branding portion of this done pretty soon, so that we can announce the collaboration before the SABR convention, which is at the end of the month.

Header

I use the Vector theme for this, and that has the header (SABR/Baseball Reference Encyclopedia) cutting off just before the final "e" in Reference. Front page template changes

Hello, I'm working on converting the front page over to our new Sports Reference page templates so I'm converting some of the table stuff over to

div's instead.

We've also added some styles to our site css to handle things on the bullpen section. You can e-mail me if you find an issue that needs to be dealt with.

Site redesign

Am I the only one having a tough time getting used to the new bullpen? I used the menu on the left constantly, and now can't find Recent changes, special pages, etc. On a particular page's menu, what links here was very useful. Am I just missing where these are? That is strange, I've seen a few small changes (different fonts, some templates not working), but the red links still appear, as does the sidebar on the left with the most useful links. Here's another issue:

Sometimes, the "what links here" shows redirects and sometimes it doesn't.

Ex. if I do what links here from Caracas, Distrito Capital, it also shows pages that link to Caracas, Caracas, Venezuela, Caracas, Distrito Federal and Caracas, D.F.

But if I do what links here from Martín Pérez, it doesn't show pages that link to Martin Perez.

Recent site maintenance

Am I the only one having issues with the site after the recent maintenance? Some edits need to be saved 2, 3 times before it saves. The Recent Changes page perpetually shows the "view newest changes" message, even when there aren't any new changes. And I can't upload a replacement file for an image (I haven't tried a new image). Email links not working

Whenever I get an email about changes to a page on my watchlist, the link will be to akin to https://bpv.baseball-reference.com/bpv/index.php?title=Sam_Field&diff=next&oldid=813016
