A new featured article?[edit]

How about an article that features some of the top foreign leagues? Sorry but these "Features Articles" are Featured way to long of a time period.--Isais1 11:15, 27 February 2011 (EST)

Any suggestions? - --Mischa 12:45, 28 February 2011 (EST)

Josh Hancock received unanimous support in his featured article candidacy page.[1] Alex 14:38, 28 February 2011 (EST)

Hancock sounds good. If we want another international article soon, I think Ming-Tsu Lu would be interesting as we haven't had anyone from Taiwan featured yet. - --Mischa 20:16, 6 March 2011 (EST)

I am Sick and tired of seeing Koichi Tabuchi get a NEW ARTICLE!!!!!--Isais1 17:59, 10 October 2010 (EDT)

Gibson's been up on the main page for a while. Any ideas for a new featured article? Charlie Manuel maybe? - --Mischa 17:31, 2 January 2007 (EST)

Manuel looks like a good choice to me --Just me 19:46, 2 January 2007 (EST)

How about Travis Hafner? The guy leads the league three times in a row in Adjusted OPS but he can't get into an All-Star game and he can't get close to an MVP award. The guy is so under-rated as to be off the map. - Randy 23:20 2 January 2007 (EST)

If Hafner's article is ever as complete as Manuel's, then he might make a good feature. --Just me 23:47, 2 January 2007 (EST)

I replaced Gibson with Manuel. - --Mischa 20:37, 10 January 2007 (EST)

As Manuel was there almost two months, I replaced him with the 1983 Expos as had been discussed. Feel free to change the write-up on the main page if it doesn't seem complete. - --Mischa 12:16, 8 March 2007 (EST)

Buddy Lewis might work at some point --Jeff 09:30, 23 April 2007 (EDT)

Can we get a new featured article? I'm tired of looking at Enos' face when you load up the bullpen... Whatever you choose is fine.Oaktree_b 21:11, 23 October 2009 (EDT)

Does someone want to propose one? I keep meaning to finish up "my" Koichi Tabuchi article but haven't had time. - --Mischa 20:31, 24 October 2009 (EDT)

How about Lou Brissie? He's pretty interesting. Oaktree_b 18:47, 13 November 2009 (EST)

The discussion will be at BR Bullpen:Featured Article Candidates/Lou Brissie . Please comment! - --Mischa 20:12, 14 November 2009 (EST)

We've done a good job this year of rotating the featured articles every couple months instead of 5-6 months as we were doing before. Next, I think one with an international focus might be nice after covering a MLB player and a minor league team with our last two - --Mischa 12:19, 9 September 2011 (EDT)

Today in Baseball[edit]

I tried to fill in the January 10 Today in Baseball slot but the entry won't show up on the Main Page. When you go to edit Main Page, it says it's looking for Template: Today in Baseball/January 9 and I filled that in too, but it still isn't showing up. Can someone help?

Weird. Now, it shows up without any edits to the Main Page or the Template, but the formatting is all wacky.

All fixed now.

- --Mischa 12:49, 10 January 2007 (EST)

Today in Baseball works from my home computer and from Internet Explorer at work but Mozilla Firefox at work keeps bringing up the January 15 events the last few days. Can someone figure this out? - --Mischa 12:42, 18 January 2007 (EST)

When a template on the main page is changed (such as the TDiH), the page cache must be purged.

Is it just my browser, or is the Bullpen acting odd the last couple of days? I get pages opening with huge fonts randomly. --Jeff 00:12, 21 May 2007 (EDT)

Mine has been working okay. - --Mischa 17:58, 21 May 2007 (EDT)

Player debuts?[edit]

Hello...what happened to the link for player debuts in a particular year?

I think they got erased in the new year section format. They're still available on the main B-R page so I see no need to add them back in unless there's great demand. - --Mischa 10:45, 24 June 2007 (EDT)

Software Version?[edit]

I copied some code from wikipedia over here and it doesn't seem to be working (see: Chief Yellow Horse). Is there someway to upgrade the version of software on here? //Baseball guy 05:01, 4 July 2007 (EDT)

Jose Mesa - 11th "Player"?[edit]

I think you mean Mesa is the 11th pitcher to reach 1,000 games in the majors. There have been many "players" who have accomplished that. - Randy 19:06, 29 July 2007 (EDT)

Thanks. - --Mischa 20:27, 29 July 2007 (EDT)

Season articles[edit]

Hey, I gave you guys an extra half day. I appreciate the votes, and 3 people of 4 agree with #2, therefore I have started moving again. Alert me if you truly protest this.

FYI, #1 and #3 will be redirects. That way it'll work well from the main B-R page. Happy editing! Soxrock 12:53, 14 August 2007 (EDT)

Re: redirects, you are creating a lot of double redirects, because everything redirects to Year, team's name at the moment. So those will all be double redirects to Year, team's ful name now. --Jeff 13:12, 14 August 2007 (EDT)

Oh, sorry. But, how would #3 redirect to #1? I'm confused, either way, I'll fix all double redirects I see. Can you give me an example of what your talking about right now? A link? Thanks Soxrock 13:21, 14 August 2007 (EDT)

I just fixed the 5 or 6 that had been created. If option 3 redirects to option 1 now, and option 1 is moved to option 2, then option 3 automatically becomes a double redirect to option 2. Hopefully I'm explaining it right. Any time a page is moved, the old page becomes a redirect to the new page. --Jeff 13:33, 14 August 2007 (EDT)

Ok, I see now. However, #2 is what the pages will be ultimately moved to. So, if I can say this understandably, #1 currently redirects to #3 for a few teams. If I redirect #3 to #2, then #1 is a double-redirect to #2. So, when it's done, I have to fix the double redirects of #1 to #2. However, for the majority of the teams which I have yet to move, i.e. #2 redirects to #1, I'll need to reverse that. Oh the hard work. Thanks for saying it in a way you can understand it Jeff. HEAD'S UP[edit]

Ok, I just thought that I'd make a comment so that I don't have to repeat myself to everyone:

I am an editor at Wikipedia named, well, Soxrock. I decided to chip in over here to help develop this place. However, I thought of taking elements of Wikipedia and incorporating it into the Bullpen. However, since some of the names don't work here (like Jack Clark (baseball)|Jack Clark) I've tried to remove all those kind of names as I find them. When I was busy with the World Series articles, I removed so many red links it's not even funny. I think that because of the links still found red and whatnot that I am somewhat unjustly criticized. It's not like I'm just giving a could shoulder to those red links. So when you find articles from Wikipedia and find a couple red links, I just happened to either miss them or they still linked somewhere else. I did not purposely ignore them. Thanks for your help everyone Soxrock 17:20, 17 August 2007 (EDT)

Wikipedia vote[edit]

  • Yall win, and I'll oblige. Especially after the mini-controversy caused by me adding a few stat tables. I'll just use Wikipedia as a source at most, barring what I've said above. SoxrockTalk/Edit list 12:29, 30 September 2007 (EDT)

Wanted Pages[edit]

There are 9 pages with over 100 links and 25 total pages with over 50 links to them on the wanted pages list.

We're down to 3 pages over 100 links and 16 total over 50 links! Let's keep wittling 'em down. --Jeff 20:07, 16 November 2007 (EST)

4 pages over 150 links and 17 pages over 50 links. including [[Template:Trcenter]] and Template:ReleaseTerms --Jeff 16:37, 20 December 2007 (EST)

2 pages over 150 links and 15 pages over 50 links. What are [[Template:Trcenter]] and Template:ReleaseTerms anyway? --Jeff 23:17, 2 January 2008 (EST)

I'd ask MichaelEng. - --Mischa 07:24, 3 January 2008 (EST)

Only 5 pages left over 50 links. 22 total over 25 links. Great! --Jeff 22:46, 5 August 2008 (EDT)

Now only 2 pages over 50 links (1993 Intercontinental Cup and Softball) and 6 total over 25 links (1999 Baltimore Orioles Cuban National Team Exhibition Series, List of Cuban Defectors, 2009 Futures Game, 2010 Kinston Indians) --Jeff 13:48, 25 December 2010 (EST)

Pat ourselves on the back[edit]

I have a feeling Sean's intent for the Bullpen was to have a biographical encyclopedia of major leaguers, but at this point the Bullpen is probably the best source on the web for minor league info, and one of the best (if not the best) for international competition, Negro League, Cuban, and Japanese baseball. --Jeff 12:25, 24 August 2007 (EDT)

I think japanbaseballdaily is probably the best Japanese source and Wikipedia might have more on Cuba and possibly on the Negro Leagues (of course, they've been around three times as long) but I think we're certainly up there in all those categories and after we've been around for five or ten years, I think this will be a very comprehensive site. Still a ways to go, but what progress we've made! - --Mischa 13:12, 24 August 2007 (EDT)

Image for Today's News[edit]

Can someone add our Clay Buchholz image to the Today's News as it is more current than the LLWS. I hope to catch up a bit this week as I plan to take off a week to help with the baby. - --Mischa 21:09, 2 September 2007 (EDT)

New Category?[edit]

I have come across quite a few players who were doctors, or lawyers, away from the diamond. Any thoughts to creating categories for things like that... or is that adding unnecessary categories? -Chisoxfan 23:11, 10 September 2007 (EDT)

I'm ambivalent about it. It might be neat (like the politicians category) but there is a lot more major work to be done. - --Mischa 09:41, 11 September 2007 (EDT)

Probably more suitable for a list, categorized under frivolities. --Philippe 10:46, 11 September 2007 (EDT)

Uh, what?[edit]

Just an example: George_H.W._Bush. I see that it talks about his "sports" life, but is it notable for a "baseball" encyclopedia? I just need to ask this. SoxrockTalk/Edit list

Every recent President has a page. Bush Sr. actually played baseball at Yale. Note that their biographies focus on links to baseball, not on their political accomplishments. --Philippe 08:44, 28 September 2007 (EDT)

Soxrock[edit]

Hopefully I didn't overstep my bounds, and I really hope I didn't chase away a potential source of improvement for the Bullpen. I just don't think we need to be a wikipedia clone. --Jeff 12:42, 29 September 2007 (EDT)

I relented Jeff. Everything is good. That note I wrote yesterday morning just ate at me all day, and, as I've read before (here) there was no way I would really leave the Bullpen.
Having said this, I'm not any happier at the transgressions of the other day, but I just couldn't leave. Besides, I had great work for the playoff pages lined up, and leaving now would've been bonehead. I'll be on a semi-break for an indefinite period (probably a few weeks) but I won't be inactive for weeks to come. I've unhidden my talk page and changed my userpage notice on the top. And, if you would please note, the part about the 1918 Red Sox, I was given permission by Mischa to do that stuff, just in case your wondering. Thanks SoxrockTalk/Edit list 12:24, 30 September 2007 (EDT)

Question about Removal[edit]

On a lot of biographical pages it will say "Click on edit above to add more biographical information". Should I just remove this or should it stay? jj137 (Talk) 22:22, 4 October 2007 (EDT)

I, for one, think it should stay. It creates a section on the page. When the bio fills up, it can be changed to simply "Biographical Information" --Jeff 01:11, 5 October 2007 (EDT)

It could just be changed to that now. jj137 (Talk) 15:27, 5 October 2007 (EDT)

That is from the beginning of the BR Bullpen - Sean put it on all the thousands of player pages. I don't see the need for it - just putting biographical information works for me. - --Mischa 11:24, 7 October 2007 (EDT)

Yeah, now I'm just changing the wording to "Biographical Information", if I change it at all (which I generally do). jj137 (Talk) 17:02, 7 October 2007 (EDT)

This is weird[edit]

Tell me this isn't totally odd. I've been going a little edit crazy the past couple hours or however long, and well, I came across the same random page twice. To have proof I had edited the page 21 minutes ago. jj137 (Talk) 22:57, 4 October 2007 (EDT)

All right I just did it again. jj137 (Talk) 21:42, 6 October 2007 (EDT)

I guess the "random page" generator needs more randomness. I'll check with Sean. - --Mischa 11:24, 7 October 2007 (EDT)

No, no, there really is no "element of randomness", as it could pick any of those 42000+ articles. I think it's more just that I'm hitting the button way too much (maybe 200+ times a day) and I've had some "luck" with it. (BTW, it just happened a third time. No worries, I won't post here if it happens again) jj137 (Talk) 17:00, 7 October 2007 (EDT)

Question[edit]

I have a question about some of the location articles. Would it be OK to move articles such as "Cincinnati, OH" to "Cincinnati, Ohio"? Well, actually, a better question would be whether we should write out the state names or abbreviate them. Thanks   jj137 (Talk) 21:33, 23 October 2007 (EDT)

I see no reason to move the pages. Abbreviating the state names is fine by me. - --Mischa 10:10, 24 October 2007 (EDT)

You can write a re-direct link from Cincinnati, Ohio to Cincinnati, OH, but please don't change the geographic names system. It's been the subject of many discussions and is the result of consensus. --Philippe 10:53, 24 October 2007 (EDT)

OK, sounds good   jj137 (Talk) 20:04, 24 October 2007 (EDT)

Templates[edit]

How do you create a template? I want to make templates for minor league stadiums by league (PCL Stadiums, IL Stadiums etc) I think that if more people see that we need pages for a good number of these stadiums they may get done more quickly and better. --Biggtone23 14:49, 25 October 2007 (EDT)

What type of template? If you want to look at the "coding" for a template, type Template:(name of the template) in the search box. For example, Template:Cincinnati Reds seasons.   jj137 (Talk) 12:13, 26 October 2007 (EDT)

The Bullpen has been running real slow the last day or two. Am I the only one who has to wait for a couple minutes for the Recent Changes page to load? Am I the only one getting advertising pages popping up? --Jeff 12:42, 6 November 2007 (EST)

I don't have advertising pages. It was running slowly for me yesterday after Sean adjusted the editing for non-registered users but is going okay today. - --Mischa 12:49, 6 November 2007 (EST)

Is there a reason I now have to answer a math problem every time I make an edit and not just when there is a new external link?   jj137 (Talk) 17:19, 6 November 2007 (EST)

That was Sean's protection against the gibberish-insertion. It seems to have worked but was only supposed to apply to non-registered users. Let me notify him it's affecting registered users too. - --Mischa 19:33, 6 November 2007 (EST)

OK, thanks. Is it working for sysops also?   jj137 (Talk) 21:35, 6 November 2007 (EST)

Link[edit]

Does anyone think the main (big, at top) link to the BB-Ref site should be plainlinked? I personally think it would make it a bit better, but let's get some other opinions on this.   jj137 (Talk) 17:02, 8 December 2007 (EST)

Possible (future) Featured[edit]

Hey, just wanted to tell everyone to keep an eye on John Mayberry; I've been putting the card template on a lot of articles - and so far that one has a lot of potential - just needs some length and a few more references.--danielfolsom 23:46, 5 July 2008 (EDT)

Just to avoid confusion, let me amend that statement - what I'm trying to say is that article seems to have a lot of potential given that it's on a relatively famous player and that it is already in prose form.--danielfolsom 00:05, 6 July 2008 (EDT)

Typo in the "Did you know" section[edit]

Hey there. I just came back to see how things were doing. I noticed there was a typo in the 'Did you know" section on the Main Page. New websites for European baseball[edit]

The IBAF along with the various international federations have created websites with stats, box scores, game updates, player interviews, all in English and the native language (German, French etc) for each country involved. Wikipedia licensing news[edit]

I don't know if you all know about this, but I'll post it just in case. Wikipedia recently had a vote among contributors over the possibility of going from the GFDL only to either CC-BY-SA only, both CC and GFDL or leaving things as they are now (GFDL). The results should be announced any day now.

I only post this here as an FYI. If they do go CC-BY-SA, it would affect our ability to copy text from their site and use it here, as the Bullpen is GFDL only. I see no point in changing our licensing here, but if Wikipedia changes, we should all be aware before posting both here and there. --Oaktree_b 21:22, 19 May 2009 (EDT)

Apparently Wikipedia has voted to go with the CC-by-sa and the GFDL starting June 15th. All contributions will be dual licensed, or CC only. They won't be able to import GFDL only text. Good news, bad news, I'm not sure. I guess we won't be able to import text here as the Bullpen isn't CC licensed... --Oaktree_b 21:16, 25 May 2009 (EDT)

I'm fine with not importing text from them. Are they still allowed to rip us off as they so often do? And can people still "cross-post"? - --Mischa 21:23, 25 May 2009 (EDT)

From what I understand, when you post on Wikipedia, you will now (soon, after June 15th) dual license your contribution under the GFDL and the CC-by-sa. I don't think they'll be allowed to import from an only GFDL source like the bullpen, and I guess cross posting won't work either, and the text will be under both CC and GFDL, but the Bullpen is only GFDL. From the discussions on the Wikimedia website, they'll be fine to import from CC-only sources, but not from GFDL-only sources. I guess the Bullpen is the odd-man out here. It seems that most wikis are now going the CC route, as it makes it easier to share the data without having to print the GFDL license and include it with every copy you make. I guess you could cross post, putting the info here first, then changing it ever so slightly before going to wikipedia. I'm not a lawyer, so I don't really know how it would work. Maybe we should double check with Sean Forman, or ask some of the more senior peopl here... --Oaktree_b 22:13, 26 May 2009 (EDT)

OK, directly from the wikimedia foundation, I found the following:

Are you basically replacing the GFDL on Wikipedia with CC-BY-SA? No, we proposed that all content currently available under GFDL will also be made available under the CC-BY-SA license, and that all future revisions must be dual licensed, with the exception of CC-BY-SA-only additions from external sources. What is dual-licensing? How are you going to administer it? It simply means that content will be available under both the GFDL and CC-BY-SA licenses simultaneously, unless some CC-BY-SA-only materials are imported and incorporated into that piece of content. In other words, reusers will be able to choose whether to reuse Wikipedia content under the GFDL license or the CC-BY-SA license (with a few exceptions). We have worked with Free Software Foundation and others to try to implement dual-licensing in a way that requires relatively little administrative overhead (or editor or user overhead). The outline of this arrangement were spelled out in e-mail by Richard Stallman, who was mindful of the need to make the problems of dual-licensing manageable: ALL contributors agree to the following: Wikipedia can release their newly written text under both GFDL and CC-BY-SA in parallel. However, if they imported any external material that's available under CC-BY-SA and not under GFDL, Wikipedia is bound by that. All old revisions are released under GFDL and CC-BY-SA. All new revisions are released with this license statement: This page is released under CC-BY-SA. Depending on its editing history, it MAY also be available under the GFDL; see [link] for how to determine that.

So we may still be able to import under the GFDL, unless the Wikipedia article has used some CC-by-sa only text. You'd have to look at the page history to determine it. Cross posting should be ok then, so long as we don't include any CC-by-sa only text in our post.

The oldest pages say they were created at 01:43, July 21, 2005. --Jeff 21:40, 1 June 2010 (EDT)

OK, we can hold off on the celebrations for another month yet... Oaktree_b 23:40, 1 June 2010 (EDT)

Spam[edit]

Some dude is spamming their crappy baseball card website on a ton of pages. It might be useful if the checklists for each player was somewhat complete but it's not even close. Contributons (spam) from user Anwrak. Is there a way to roll back all of these or do you have to go in and edit them individually? -- Trauty

Image upload problems[edit]

I try to upload an image, and I get this message: The upload directory (public) is not writable by the webserver. Oaktree_b 22:36, 23 June 2011 (EDT)

Sean said that it should be working now. - --Mischa 20:22, 27 June 2011 (EDT)

Still having problems using the Flickr upload bot, where you can search for a name and it returns flickr images that match. It's been down for a while now. I get this message: Set $wgShowExceptionDetails = true; at the bottom of LocalSettings.php to show detailed debugging information. Oaktree_b 15:15, 4 December 2011 (EST)

I still get the same error when using the upload file under the Special Pages option, it's been down since last year. I've tried it in Internet Explorer and Firefox, same problem. Can this be fixed? Oaktree_b 23:10, 9 May 2012 (EDT)

I've asked our host to install phpFlickr which should fix the problem. Admin 14:21, 31 May 2012 (EDT)

Unfortunately, it looks like i need to upgrade mediawiki which is a big job. I hope to do so this summer. Admin 17:03, 5 June 2012 (EDT)

Who is this guy?[edit]

Does anybody know who the guy in the suit/tie is? I imagine he's an executive for the Rangers, but I can't figure out who... http://www.dvidshub.net/image/440047/guard-recruits-enlist-major-league-baseball-game#.TslvMVauOdk Oaktree_b 16:25, 20 November 2011 (EST)

Add stat?[edit]

I am a sabermetrician. Is it okay if I add a few statistics I created?

It would be preferable if you would add only more generally accepted statistics to mainstream pages, but you can create articles about some of your own statistics and classify them under the "sabermetrics" category. Someone will come around and have a look at them and tell you if they're acceptable or not. Like wikipedia, we try to avoid articles about stuff someone and his buddies just made up. There are better places to present new statistical measures in order for them to gain mainstream acceptance. --Philippe 04:09, 27 January 2013 (EST)

Edit request[edit]

I can't edit the main page myself, but I noticed something that should probably be corrected. At the bottom of the main page, there is a notice that reads "The BR Bullpen is modeled on the Wikipedia: for more help use their help, view their Tutorial and Introduction". Perhaps it would be better if that read "The BR Bullpen is modeled on the English Wikipedia: for more help use their help, view their Tutorial and Introduction". Just my 2 cents. Error in News section[edit]

In the news section on the main page it says "Carlos Beltran (pictured) sets a new all-time mark by hitting the 16th postseason home run of his career; he was previously tied with Babe Ruth. " Mickey Mantle has 18 post season home runs though. --Biggtone23 (talk) 14:42, 13 October 2013 (EDT)

Thanks for picking this up. I've made all the required changes. --Philippe (talk) 03:47, 14 October 2013 (EDT)

Ed Barrow card[edit]

That Ed Barrow card makes him look a lot like Ed Asner --Cmcgill (talk) 21:46, 16 January 2014 (EST)

Wow. Hadn't previously noticed the resemblance. - --Mischa (talk) 09:02, 17 January 2014 (EST)

Merge?[edit]

So when was this merge with SABR decided? Not upset, just a little out of the blue... Oaktree_b (talk) 22:27, 15 July 2014 (EDT)

Merger[edit]

Sean Lahman sent this email to Philippe and myself last week:

I wanted to reach out to both of you because you're the two most active editors on the Bullpen site. I'm not sure whether you're aware, but there's recently been an agreement between Sean Forman and the folks at SABR to rebrand the site as the SABR/Baseball Reference Baseball Encyclopedia. I've been given the task of overseeing that project.

In the short term, that will simply mean changing the name on the front page and perhaps on some of the "About" pages.

While conceptually, this is a merger between the Bullpen site and the SABRpedia site, the plan is to leave the existing Bullpen site as-is and manually add content from the old SABRpedia site in selected subject areas. There's also the hope that over time, we can tap into some of the existing SABR content and make it available at the new merged site.

I'd like to get the re-branding portion of this done pretty soon, so that we can announce the collaboration before the SABR convention, which is at the end of the month.

--Cmcgill (talk) 09:44, 16 July 2014 (EDT)

Header[edit]

I use the Vector theme for this, and that has the header (SABR/Baseball Reference Encyclopedia) cutting off just before the final "e" in Reference. Not sure if the same or something similar is happening with other themes. Not a big deal for probably 99% of the users though. Just an FYI. --Cmcgill (talk) 22:15, 22 July 2014 (EDT)

I'm using Monobook theme. Does the same thing for me. Although I hadn't even noticed it until you pointed it out. --Jeff (talk) 02:06, 23 July 2014 (EDT)

BR Bullpen/SABR Merger[edit]

Here is the official announcement from the SABR Bulletin dated July 25:

SABR Encyclopedia, Baseball-Reference Bullpen partner to form online baseball repository

The SABR Encyclopedia and the Baseball-Reference.com Bullpen are combining their vast repositories of baseball knowledge under one roof.

Continuing a longstanding partnership, SABR and Sports Reference, LLC, have decided to merge their baseball research wiki sites and organize their collective baseball knowledge online. Thanks to the diligent efforts of Sean Lahman and the community of editors at both sites, SABRpedia entries such as the Spread of Baseball Project and the Collegiate Baseball Database are now available in the same place as the Bullpen's detailed histories of Negro League teams and minor league players.

The new SABR/Baseball-Reference Encyclopedia can be accessed at SABRpedia.org or Baseball-Reference.com.

"No one has more breadth and depth of baseball knowledge than the members of SABR," said Sean Forman, President of Sports Reference, LLC. "It's an honor for Sports Reference to have the chance to work with them in cataloging this knowledge and making it available for the public to use and learn from. The Bullpen already has 70,000 pages and I feel that with SABR and its members' involvement we are poised to make this the primary repository of baseball knowledge in the world."

Who can use the SABR/Baseball-Reference Encyclopedia? Anyone. With a little collective effort, the Encyclopedia can become the best place to find information about baseball. All content posted in the Encyclopedia is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License, meaning that people using or copying this material must attribute it properly and must share any derivative products with the same license. Want to help out? Read how to contribute.

We welcome input from editors and contributors to the SABRpedia and Bullpen sites, and encourage you to continue advancing our collective knowledge of baseball in the new SABR/Baseball-Reference Encyclopedia. As with all wikis, editors and contributors are the lifeblood of the site, and we look forward to combining the best of both worlds with SABR and Baseball-Reference.com. For more information, please contact Sean Lahman or Jacob Pomrenke.

Page Title[edit]

Just wondering if the page title should be changed to the SABR/Baseball-Reference Encyclopedia, to match the banner. That would require editing the LocalSettings.php file, so it would have to be done by Sean Foreman or someone else with access to the server. --Cmcgill (talk) 18:00, 28 July 2014 (EDT)

Vintage Baseball[edit]

My wife sent me a link to a NPR story on vintage baseball - does anyone want to do an article for it here? Sounds cool. - --Mischa (talk) 17:30, 14 May 2015 (EDT)

https://www.gcv.org/Volunteer/19th-century-Base-Ball I remember reading about this club in Upstate New York. The young female spectators are kept apart from the male and married spectators, to avoid any impropriety. Oaktree_b (talk) 00:38, 25 July 2015 (EDT)
There's also a famous and very funny Conan O'Brien clip about this. [2] --Philippe (talk) 04:53, 25 July 2015 (EDT)

Front page template changes[edit]

Hello, I'm working on converting the front page over to our new Sports Reference page templates so I'm converting some of the table stuff over to

div's instead.

We've also added some styles to our site css to handle things on the bullpen section. You can e-mail me if you find an issue that needs to be dealt with.

Site redesign[edit]

Am I the only one having a tough time getting used to the new bullpen? I used the menu on the left constantly, and now can't find Recent changes, special pages, etc. On a particular page's menu, what links here was very useful. Am I just missing where these are? At the top of the new page, am I the only one that doesn't get anthing from the "toolbox", "more", and "personal tools" links? --Jeff (talk) 18:19, 24 February 2017 (UTC)

I am missing those too - what links here, recent changes, etc. Also the lack of red links is not good. I emailed Sean and he's looking into it. Let him know your specific concerns too - --Mischa (talk) 18:37, 24 February 2017 (UTC)

Yes.. the red links was a very helpful tool also. --Jeff (talk) 18:54, 24 February 2017 (UTC)

That is strange, I've seen a few small changes (different fonts, some templates not working), but the red links still appear, as does the sidebar on the left with the most useful links. Maybe you should look under the preferences tag and try to reset them to what you had previously. --Philippe (talk) 20:22, 24 February 2017 (UTC)

Ummm I don't have the preferences tab anymore. --Jeff (talk) 20:35, 24 February 2017 (UTC)

I've had my skin set to Vector for as long as I've been a member. I still have all the links on the left that were there before. I think only the default skin was altered. You should be able to get to your Preferences here: [[3]] --Cmcgill (talk) 21:07, 24 February 2017 (UTC)

Thank you. Setting it to Vector put everything back for me. --Jeff (talk) 21:13, 24 February 2017 (UTC)

Searching "bullpen" in the search box takes you right there. Also I'll try to get through the above issues next week. Sorry it wasn't as smooth as it could have been. Thank you as always for all you do. --Admin (talk) 21:02, 25 February 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for the help, Philippe and Cmcgill. The Vector skin really helped - --Mischa (talk) 18:47, 27 February 2017 (UTC)

Here's another issue:

Sometimes, the "what links here" shows redirects and sometimes it doesn't.

Ex. if I do what links here from Caracas, Distrito Capital, it also shows pages that link to Caracas, Caracas, Venezuela, Caracas, Distrito Federal and Caracas, D.F.

But if I do what links here from Martín Pérez, it doesn't show pages that link to Martin Perez.

I emailed Sean about this one - --Mischa (talk) 17:08, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

Having been gone awhile, I'm completely lost here. I'm only an occasional contributor any more, but I used to be able to navigate this site, but now I can't find my watch list or recent contributions, or much of anything else, for that matter. I've seen discussions here of "skin set to Vector" and have no idea what that is. Is there a road map here? -- Couillaud (talk) 14:59, 8 March 2017 (UTC)

Cmcgill posted the link : [[4]] Go there and set skin to vector. That seems to hve worked for Mischa and I. --Jeff (talk) 15:32, 8 March 2017 (UTC)

  • I had trouble with the new format just reading where a link was. I clicked on what was to me blank space, and found the link you listed. It looks better now. Thanks. -- Couillaud (talk) 18:04, 8 March 2017 (UTC)

Hello, we got some work done on these pages now. The toolboxes, What Links here etc should now work again. I apologize for that.

Here is a link to a screenshot of where these tools are. [5]

A VERY BAD LINK HERE should show up as red text

I believe that some of the templates are the main remaining issues. LMK if there are others. Thank you fo ryour patience. --Admin (talk) 20:06, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

Search[edit]

Anybody else having issues with the search? i.e. "A database query error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software." --Jeff (talk) 01:24, 18 June 2017 (UTC)

Yeah im getting it too --Biggtone23 (talk) 00:03, 19 June 2017 (UTC)

I've sent a message to Sean about this last week. --Philippe (talk) 13:38, 19 June 2017 (UTC)

Very sorry. I should get to it today or tomorrow. --Admin (talk) 16:21, 20 June 2017 (UTC)

Recent site maintenance[edit]

Am I the only one having issues with the site after the recent maintenance? Some edits need to be saved 2, 3 times before it saves. The Recent Changes page perpetually shows the "view newest changes" message, even when there aren't any new changes. And I can't upload a replacement file for an image (I haven't tried a new image). Jeff (talk) 17:30, 20 July 2020 (UTC)

I emailed Sean about the above. - Mischa (talk) 17:37, 20 July 2020 (UTC)

Email links not working[edit]

Whenever I get an email about changes to a page on my watchlist, the link will be to akin to https://bpv.baseball-reference.com/bpv/index.php?title=Sam_Field&diff=next&oldid=813016

Clicking on said links will result in "This site can't be reached". It's the initial bpv that's the problem. Sure would be nice if that could be fixed. --Cmcgill (talk) 12:48, 12 October 2020 (UTC)

Congressional baseball game[edit]

Should we have an article? - Mischa (talk) 18:52, 28 July 2022 (UTC)

We discussed this a couple of years ago. A general article on the game is warranted is someone wants to do it, but we do not need to have yearly coverage. Philippe (talk) 19:55, 28 July 2022 (UTC)

Site issues[edit]

The site issues seem to be finally resolved, as far as I can tell. Is anybody still having trouble? - Mischa (talk) 19:56, 11 May 2023 (UTC)

It still does a weird change of font size when you click in the edit box. But other than that, its close to the way it was. Jeff (talk) 01:15, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
Well, my page was still the same. I don't know it's because of the oversea IP or something else haha -Rugosa1134 (talk) 14:03, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
I haven't been able to recapture my old appearance settings either. Part of the continual rot of the internet, I guess. Philippe (talk) 14:10, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
Its kind of maddening to click in the edit box and everything shifts. Its especially frustrating on long pages. Jeff (talk) 19:44, 13 May 2023 (UTC)
