Thomas Clarence Noyes

Biographical Information[edit]

Thomas C. Noyes was co-owner of the Washington Senators of the American League with Ban Johnson from 1904 until his death in 1912. He succeeded his father, Crosby Stuart Noyes, the newspaper's founder, as editor and publisher of the Washington Evening Star. He bought his shares from Johnson, who had invested his own money to ensure the new American League had a presence in the nation's capital, and Fred Postal. He was a hands-on owner, also serving as the team's President, and was well respected by his peers. The Senators were a mediocre team during his tenure, whose highlight was the signing of pitcher Walter Johnson in 1907. In 1912, he hired Clark Griffith to be the team manager and the team's fortunes were beginning to turn around when he died suddenly of pneumonia at the age of 44. Griffith would eventually put together a group that bought the team in 1919.

Noyes was also president of the Washington Board of Trade at the time of his death.
