Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Tony Woods was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the first round of the 1982 amateur draft; the pick was compensation from the Montreal Expos for having signed C Tim Blackwell as a free agent the previous winter.

Woods played in the Cubs minor league system from 1982 to 1987, reaching AAA with the Iowa Cubs in both 1985 and 1987, albeit for a total of just 62 games during which he hit .216. He then played for the Miami Marlins, who were an unaffiliated team in the Florida State League later in the 1987 season. His final season was in 1988, with the Tampa White Sox, in the Chicago White Sox organization.

His best season was his second one, in 1983 with the Quad Cities Cubs of the Midwest League, where he hit .278/.351/.393 in 122 games, with 5 homers and 63 RBIs in 122 games. He followed that by hitting .281/.346/.413 for the Midland Cubs of the Texas League in 1984, but he missed half of that season, playing just 73 games, and his hitting was never again as sharp after he returned to action the next year.
