Art Hauger[edit]

Please keep us informed if/when you gather more info on Art Hauger. I had (possibly wrongly) assumed that the minor league manager was the same guy as the major leaguer. If there's two guys, we definately want to seperate the two out. Thanks. --Jeff 23:38, 9 October 2007 (EDT)

Playing Field Terminology[edit]

Thanks for the work on some of the terminology related to the playing field. - --Mischa 16:09, 174 October 2007 (EDT)

Vandalism[edit]

Wow, what is with all of the vandalism lately? Good job reverting it, I think we got it all.   jj137 (Talk) 23:07, 24 October 2007 (EDT)

Ha ha, possibly, that would make sense. We've seen this random vandalism countless times before, but not so much. I think it may just be one or two people changing their IP address over and over.   jj137 (Talk) 23:11, 24 October 2007 (EDT)

Just a quick little update here, in case you haven't read the previous message yet. I just did a quick IP lookup, as I was getting suspicious, and this person was traced to...Mexico City. I guess that's why the words don't make any sense.   jj137 (Talk) 23:18, 24 October 2007 (EDT)

One last update, I promise :) I left the person a message, and they didn't stop. I then translated a message into Spanish...and they stopped, amazingly. I really didn't think that would work.   jj137 (Talk) 23:31, 24 October 2007 (EDT)

Stubs[edit]

I don't think there is a set standard. As DeVoe was a trainer, I think a list of his jobs and a couple paragraphs is sufficient. For a player, I think we should have at least their batting line or pitching line for each year. For a manager, their record each year. - --Mischa 19:40, 11 December 2007 (EST)

Minor note[edit]

Don't put commas in between a player's last name and first name in the category sort section or else it will cause players to show up out of order. Ex. [[Category:Player|Beard,Ted]], not [[Category:Player|Beard, Ted]] - --Mischa 08:51, 31 December 2007 (EST)

Template[edit]

If the Main Page is not updating properly, go to The Main Page talk section and click on the "Purge Main Page" link. That should fix it. - --Mischa 11:29, 30 January 2008 (EST)

Fantasy league[edit]

I just don't have time nowadays. If I had more hobby time, I'd devote it here and to the Strategic Baseball Simulator season collection. I used to have fun running a Diamond Mind fantasy league but those days are in the past for a while I think. - --Mischa 16:55, 7 February 2008 (EST)

Fantasy League Answer[edit]

Thanks for the note. I already am in a crazy league, locally, and just don't have the time for anything else on my plate right now. However I do appreciate your offer and they are a lot of fun. Thanks again.--Dugout 17:17, 7 February 2008 (EST)

I've never been a big fan of Fantasy leagues personally. I have a hard time rooting for my team and for indivdual players who are playing against my team and/or root against players on my team. Besides, I spend all my free time here at the Bullpen. Thanks for the interest. --Jeff 17:28, 7 February 2008 (EST)

Actually, me and three other people at wikipedia are currently organizing a fantasy baseball league at CBS Sportsline. Are you interested?   jj137 21:17, 7 February 2008 (EST)

Well, it looks like the league is full now. Some random people (don't know who they are) came and joined the league. Sorry....   jj137 15:56, 8 February 2008 (EST)

Wes Hodges photo[edit]

I know you had a photo of another recent Kinston star - do you have one for Wes Hodges, one of their best 2007 players and one who now has a page here? - --Mischa 20:02, 25 February 2008 (EST)

I added a page for another 2007 Kinston player - T.J. Burton. - --Mischa 20:22, 18 March 2008 (EDT)

Thanks[edit]

Thanks for the Santiago de Cuba logo. - --Mischa 20:59, 22 April 2008 (EDT)

Birthdates[edit]

When you add new player pages, could you add their birthdates to the proper page? Ex. if you can make a page for Mario Mendoza Jr., you then go to January 19 and add him under 1979 in the birth listings. - --Mischa 12:45, 16 May 2008 (EDT)

Thanks! Great work on helping with the calendar wikifying. We're still not too far ahead. - --Mischa 21:56, 17 July 2008 (EDT)

Re: Princeton Rays[edit]

You're right, in the majors we have kept the franchises as one through name changes, although we do have pages for Boston Bees and Philadelphia Blue Jays i.e. In the minors we have given each name for a team its own page - see Lakeland Tigers/Lakeland Flying Tigers and Syracuse Chiefs/Syracuse SkyChiefs. --Jeff 16:16, 20 June 2008 (EDT)

Rights[edit]

Hey, do you by any chance have deletion rights? I screwed up on an image (I forgot to lower the size before I uploaded) and I need it deleted so I can upload the image (with a lower size) again. So, if you're able it's Image:Brandon Phillips 08.jpg. If not, do you by any chance know someone who does have these rights? Thanks, --danielfolsom 23:35, 30 June 2008 (EDT)

Actually, scratch that, I'll just upload a new version - thanks--danielfolsom 23:38, 30 June 2008 (EDT)

Apology[edit]

Hey, I just realized that I made a really stupid mistake on the Lew Kent page that you caught (I made a heading == when you had it (as it was supposed to be) at === - just wanted to apologize for that; I'm not sure what I was thinking; thanks for catching it.--danielfolsom 00:16, 6 July 2008 (EDT)

Although I have to ask - is there a reason the template was removed? (actually now that I look at it I was completely reverted)--danielfolsom 00:16, 6 July 2008 (EDT)
Just to let you know, I'm not starting a revert war - I'm just changing it back to show that now the debut and final game can be turned off, as can the br links.--danielfolsom 00:27, 6 July 2008 (EDT)

Oh it's no problem at all; if you have a time I do have a quick question; does the baseball reference site have the pages of minor league players that have never been (or never made it) to the major leagues? Thanks, --danielfolsom 00:35, 6 July 2008 (EDT)

Thank you! I just needed the info to know whether or not I needed to make an edit to the template (I did); any combination should work now (P.S. - nice job on the Lew Kent page - that's looking impressive)--danielfolsom 01:04, 6 July 2008 (EDT)

Renaming[edit]

Hi there, I noticed you moved my account, but I am still editing under the account name of "RyRy5". Could you fix that? Thanks, RyRy5 (talk) 22:01, 7 August 2008 (EDT)

Well, I think I should just create a new account under the username, RyanCross, that is, if renaming can't be done here. What do you think? -- RyRy5 (talk) 23:16, 7 August 2008 (EDT)

Arturi Suzuki[edit]

He does not appear to have played in NPB. One place you could check for information is the forums section at www.japanesebaseball.com. - --Mischa 08:55, 8 August 2008 (EDT)

Top 20[edit]

Thanks Kingston Eagle...It's all yours...I had fun with that page for a couple years and it seems to get some lookers. I really didn't want to quit it but my time schedule has changed and it was getting tougher to catch it every day. If you want to re-arrange or change it in any way it won't offend me...feel free--Dugout 11:28, 16 August 2008 (EDT)

Templates[edit]

Thanks for fixing India. We're missing flags for Finland, Poland and Bulgaria. The Ireland, Sweden, Slovenia and Slovakia templates don't work. - --Mischa 15:45, 25 August 2008 (EDT)

Thanks for working on the .svg files. I wasn't looking forward to digging around in there. Jeff 16:29, 26 August 2008 (EDT)

User created Image[edit]

My friend, On the images that I did and are user created I was told to put the explanation under the "Source" heading. I have been doing that as I ran across them. I did that to the ones you edited. Thanks for your thought. --Dugout 16:32, 5 September 2008 (EDT)

Image tag question[edit]

See Talk:Ronald Jaarsma - --Mischa 12:54, 23 September 2008 (EDT)

Templates[edit]

Would it make sense to fill in the Baseball in South Korea, Baseball in USA, etc. templates instead of deleting links to them?

A couple exist - see French national team for an example. So you have a list of prominent leagues and events in that country as well as links to the national team(s) and federation. - --Mischa 21:49, 9 October 2008 (EDT)

Countries of birth[edit]

I noticed that you sometimes include country of birth on new pages you make and sometimes not. It should always be included. - --Mischa 20:53, 1 November 2008 (EDT)

Re:flag[edit]

Thanx. I tried uploading a new .svg, but as you pointed out, they don't work. That fixed the England template as on 1961 Haarlemse Honkbalweek also. --Jeff 11:39, 14 November 2008 (EST)

Stubs[edit]

Do you plan on filling in any of the new stubs you're creating? My experience is that people are more likely to flesh out a page from a "dead link" than from a stub. - --Mischa 12:54, 16 November 2008 (EST)

1) The demographic info for recent minor leaguers is all going into the SABR database AFAIK and therefore should not become unaccessible.

2) The information that will vanish, IMO, is that in online media guides that usually are replaced each year. Hence the value of creating pages for guys like Max St. Pierre who has 3 pages in the Tigers Media Guide in 2008 and might not be in any media guide in 2009.

3) There is no need to delete existing pages. I just don't think it looks good for the site if a high percentage of pages are stubs - people will figure there's not much info around. When I do a Google search for Japanese baseball players and wikipedia entries come up, I tend to ignore them because they're almost always stubs; by doing so, I'm probably ignoring some good content too but it's just not worth my time to check it out. I don't want people to associate this site with bare-bones information.

Of course, your views on the value of stubs vs. red links may differ. There are groups here on both sides of the dispute and I don't think there's a "right" and a "wrong" way. I just wanted to present my view. - --Mischa 10:06, 17 November 2008 (EST)

I notice you haven't made any updates for a few days, which is rare, and I apologize if I came down too harshly. I just wanted to give my opinion and I was not issuing any rules about appropriate entries. - --Mischa 11:39, 20 November 2008 (EST)

Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due[edit]

Since you are the one who responded to Tuesday's query addressed to Mischa, I won't bother to reproduce that message -- suffice to say my thanks to you are manifold:

  • For yesterday's ergonomic adjustment
  • For 10/28 heads up on proper footnote format
  • For overall punctuality

5 stars - out of five -- on all of the above.

My only quibble -- or, rather, request -- would be that whenever you do me a solid, please sign off on it. In such situations, I really like to know to whom I should feel grateful. Moreover, now that I have some idea of how to contact my Bullpen compadres, I fully intend to express that gratitude in a timely fashion.

Thanks again -- David

Broken Links From Minor League Team Pages[edit]

I think that most of the minor league player links should have made it over to the new site. The only issues would be when leagues and teams were linked to from the bullpen, which I apologize slipped my mind in my harried state. I may be able to do some work on my end to set up redirects between the old minor league team and league pages and the new minor league team and league pages if we are talking about hundreds and hundreds of pages now with broken links. How many such links are we talking about?

I apologize for breaking these links. The SABR data is just so much bigger and larger than the minors data I had before that my only real choice to get it onto the site was to use their db structure which caused the breaking in the first place.

I'm hoping that with the increase visibility of the bullpen we'll start to see a little more input from more people.

Lynchburg[edit]

I plan on doing bios for the 2009 Hillcats, so if you could skip over making those stubs and move on to the next CL club, that'd be good. - --Mischa 12:52, 11 May 2009 (EDT)

Template[edit]

Need a template for Indonesia. - --Mischa 20:55, 1 June 2009 (EDT)

2009 Debuts[edit]

I've noticed that you haven't added some of the 2009 debut players to the appropriate calendar date under "births" when you were doing this before. Is there a reason? - --Mischa 12:18, 4 June 2009 (EDT)

Stassi[edit]

Stassi never played for Italy in the Olympics. As his career was during the time that pros could not appear in international tourneys, I doubt he ever played for Team Italy. He did spend one season in Italy, doing very well. I'll try to make a page for him. - --Mischa 14:59, 9 June 2009 (EDT)

Featured birthdays[edit]

The featured birthdays are found at Template:Featured Birthday. Click on edit to get a list of who's featured. I have no idea how we keep this up to date when people pass on. This isn't the first time we'll have had to change it. - --Mischa 21:12, 15 June 2009 (EDT)

Sounds like a fun project. I'll try to regularly check these a week ahead of time. Kinston eagle 21:19, 15 June 2009 (EDT)

Steve Bellán[edit]

The information on Bellán came from the November/December 2007 SABR Biographical Committee Report. The sources listed are Bellán's passport application and registration at Fordham University. I can't edit the main Baseball Reference pages, but I update all the information in the Bullpen immediately when I receive the committee's newsletter. Sean Forman used to update the BRef pages a little later, based on the same information source; I'm not sure why this one hasn't been changed. --Philippe 22:24, 25 July 2009 (EDT)

Glad to hear you'll be back in action soon. We've missed your contributions. BTW, do you know the name of the player whose obit you linked me to? - --Mischa 21:07, 18 January 2010 (EST)

Let me second what Mischa said. It's good to see you back ! --Philippe 21:13, 18 January 2010 (EST)

Takemiya is correct. I'll try to get to it tomorrow. - --Mischa 21:36, 18 January 2010 (EST)

Kinston Eagle: Thanks for the fix, what was I doing wrong? I have never encountered anything like it before, again thanks and let me know.--Dugout 15:31, 9 May 2010 (EDT)

Kinston Eagle: In regards to your message, yes I made about 7 to 10 moves, mostly in the B and M letters so that all names would be in the same highth box rather then hanging on top of each other, all out of proportion, with some boxes and names as ugly as could be made. All names are under their respective capitalization and that is the necessary part. I'm sorry you have such a dislike for this page but it makes it a lot quicker and easier to locate a group of players. I spent almost two weeks getting this page prepared to work like this and I don't appreciate your comments. Please leave it as it is.--Dugout 19:39, 22 May 2010 (EDT)

Kingston Eagle: I received your message and appreciate your thoughtfulness. Thanks for your help. --Dugout 20:24, 22 May 2010 (EDT)

Thanks[edit]

Thanks for the help. I copied and pasted the last version of Valencia's article that I wrote here because it essentially doesn't exist anymore. It seems that the Bullpen is less interested in the fluff that is in Valencia's article and I got in trouble for removing. That whole "let's copy and paste Billy Pierce's article here, and see what he does with it" stunt was the last straw for me. What am I, your monkey boy? They wanna see what I would do to Billy Pierce's article, look at it on the Bullpen. I'd rather redo it here.--Johnny Spasm 07:24, 18 July 2010 (EDT)

Templates[edit]

Three templates (Lithuania, Virgin Islands, Sri Lanka) at http://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/World_University_Baseball_Championship are not working. - --Mischa 14:53, 9 August 2010 (EDT)

I'm pretty sure it was US Virgin Islands. Thanks for the other two. - --Mischa 08:02, 10 August 2010 (EDT)

Neat seeing all the 2010 obits for guys with some minor league experience - it's fun to find out what guys did off the field. - --Mischa 20:36, 13 December 2010 (EST)

Two things[edit]

1. You can scratch Tommy Taylor (minors 01) off your pictures needed list. Just Me added a pic. 2. 1990 Kinston Indians has enough votes to become a featured article. You're probably best situated to fill in the two remaining red links on the page. I'd like to hold off making it the FA until those links can get done. - --Mischa 19:37, 3 July 2011 (EDT)

Got a brief bio of Yoshikuni up. - --Mischa 10:09, 5 September 2011 (EDT)

Please comment on revised BR Bullpen:Featured Article Candidates/1989 Baltimore Orioles. Also, nice work on the Japanese Hall of Fame bios - --Mischa 20:05, 12 January 2013 (EST)

Art Hauger take two[edit]

My source for the new year of birth is the November/December 2012 SABR Biographical Committee Report, which came out this year. The sources cited are Art's World War I draft registration card and the 1900 census. It doesn't necessarily answer your remaining questions about Hauger, but at least for the major leaguer, the sources seem solid. --Philippe 01:50, 13 January 2013 (EST)

FWIW[edit]

I didn't delete the link because it was outdated. Personally, I don't see the need have the link to both the BR page and the BR minors page. There are probably arguments both ways, but the vast majority of ML players have only the link to the BR page, and I feel that's a sufficient tie-in to our main site. --Jeff (talk) 17:02, 20 April 2013 (EDT)
